Op-Ed/Review: Tohoshinki’s ‘BREAK OUT!’ PV

The Asian Powerhouse that is Tohoshinki/Dong Bang Shin Ki

is totally coming to an end isn’t it?

At least that’s all I could keep thinking as I was watching their promotional video for their upcoming single, BREAK OUT!

I was just going to review the song and PV without taking into account the drama surrounding the Tohoshinki members but that would be ignoring the elephant in the room that can no longer be ignored, especially when its so obvious.

Never are Jaejoong, Micky, Junsu, Yunho and Changmin within a single shot together. I can only imagine how awkward it would be if they were all together. Seeing as there seems to be two seperate teams within Tohoshinki at the moment the one against SM Entertainment (Jaejoong, Micky, and Junsu) and the ones for SM (Yunho and Changmin).

That only let’s you know just how much the whole lawsuit drama has affected their relationship with one another. How much tension might have been felt between Team JaeMickyJunsu and Team YunhoChangmin that they could not even been seen on the same screen together or left alone to practice a group dance for the PV as they have for most of their other PVs?

Granted I may be wrong, which I really doubt, but it a break up seems inevitable at this point. Ever since July when Jaejoong, Micky, and Junsu filed that controversial lawsuit against SM Entertainment, it just seems like there is nothing to be done. SM Entertainment is definitely not backing down and Jaejoon, Micky and Junsu are not either (good for them, fight the power!).

But where does that leave Yunho and Changmin who fullheartedly believe in SM Entertainment? The strain between them and the other members must be huge and I can only imagine that they might even be feeling resentful. Having thoughts along the lines of, ‘If they weren’t doing this lawsuit we could be recording and promoting and becoming even bigger than we are right now!’

So even if the lawsuit goes in favor of Jaejoong, Micky and Junsu and they get their contracts changed nothing can change the fact that Yunho and Changmin stuck by the dark side (SM Entertainment). And if the lawsuit doesn’t go their way then ‘oh sh_t’ that’s a lot of money they have to pay SM and they’ll basically be slaves forever.

But for now they’re even releasing a best album (probably their last album) and BREAK OUT! is their only single planned for this year in Japan and truthfully I think by the end of this year there will be no more Tohoshinki or Dong Bang Shin Ki and this whole debacle only makes me sadder and sadder.

Although I’m not a huge Tohoshinki/Dong Bang Shin Ki fan, they’re the reason I discovered K-Pop, when they did a collaboration with Koda Kumi in 2007 named Last Angel, I decided to stick by them and see what else they do. Later their song Mirotic became the first K-Pop song to ever be added to my library and I’ll forever remember them as my first Japanese boyband even though technically they were Korean but they were the first boyband in Japan that I accepted.

Now that I have that off my chest I can finally review the song and PV! The song isn’t anything particularly special (I prefer a more R&B sound from the boys instead of pop) it’s catchy and dark, and I like it. I don’t love it but that’s ok. The video, however, is total love. I love the dark elements to it and how they’re surrounded by those evil entities and it also provided me with a good LOL when Micky sees the kids and is all ‘How cute!’ and then they go crazy and he’s all ‘WTF??’

Oh how I’ll miss you all together.

Remembering the happier times…

  1. don’t u think that the lyrics kind of like what they wanted to do as a group? the part micky sang we keep faith for eternally
    thats my way of thinking….haha…

    • I like your point of view on it, it’s optimistic and hopeful, I never thought very in depth into the song lyrics since they recorded way before the whole SM scandal even started.

  2. Weren’t they on the set together while filiming the MV?
    I might be mistaken though
